Arthrocentesis

What is it?
 

A surgical procedure that can be completed in the dental chair to improve pain or to release a closed lock of the jaw. You can treat one or both joints of the TMJ.

Who is it suitable for? 


Patients who have jaw pain from:

  • Degenerative arthropathy : osteoarthritis

  • Post traumatic arthropathy : whiplash ect

  • Inflammatory arthropathy: Rheumatoid arthritis, sclerodermia ect

  • Metabolic arthropathy

  • Closed lock of sudden onset of the TMJ

How Does it work?

It is repeated Intra articular injections of hyaluronic acid into the disc space of the TMJ.
 

It works by injecting Hyaluronic acid into the joint space which results in

  • Joint stretching

  • Condylar lowering

  • Breaking adhesions

  • Disk Mobilisation

  • Catabolites removal

Can it be performed in the clinic?

Yes! Both Dr Catherine Nestor and Dr Riona Gorman have had on site clinical training under the founder of the single needle arthrocentesis technique. It can be completed under local anaesthetic in the dental chair. Our whole team are trained to make the procedure as comfortable as possible and to provide a great result.

What is TMD?

It is a collection of disorders of the TMJ. This is often caused by muscle overload due to a number of factors.
